Jack Atkins paints the southwest’s intense desert light, its spectacular vistas, and the people and things that create its sense of place. He has been fascinated with its culture and traditions since he was a teenager in Taos, New Mexico, a place that influenced him with how strongly it emphasizes and values art and artists. Now the paintings of this fourth-generation New Mexican use vivid colors and dramatic compositions to tell the story of this area’s underlying sense of drama and history.
Jack’s paintings are in a contemporary realist style, usually focusing on southwestern themes, especially those related to regional culture and traditions.
Jack started his professional life as a scientist, having earned a degree in geology from New Mexico State University. But he always felt that something was missing, and he eventually returned to his early love for art, color, composition, culture, and history. He studied art at Albuquerque’s Art Masters Academy, and since then, he has had a fulfilling career as a professional artist.
Jack lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with his wife Deena and their dog Corby. He has two daughters who currently live in Colorado and Pennsylvania.
